Building foundations for lesbian womyn of color
Programs U.C host an array of programs which are ran by committees of volunteers To find out information on how you can volunteer with us, click on the “Volunteer Opportunity” tab for further info.
Our programs include: Mahogany mommies is a support group as well as a positive outlet for black lesbian mothers and their children. We are aware that being in this “life” and raising children can often be a challenge. Not just for the parent but for the children as well. Which is why we provide the necessary tools to combat these issues. This group is not limited to biological mothers, we open the doors to “second mommies” as well. Feel free to get in on the social events, “mommy night out” play dates, support groups and more. Volunteer chaperones are always in needs as well as people interested in donating their time.
Being in a relationship is a wonderful thing, but you must be willing to put in the work that needed to make it last. This program was developed for those that want to know what it takes to grow with their partner as well as striving for longevity. This program includes discussion groups, spa retreats, movie nights, private house parties, butch/femme game night, concerts, dances, weekend trips domestic partnership and more.
Learning to love others is easier when you know how to love yourself. Being in a relationship is not always as easy as it sounds and sometimes being single can be a bit challenging. With those things in mind, this program was developed for that purpose. Our single ladies will engage “meet and greet” social activities as well discussion groups (ex. Safe touch, catering to me and more..) and special events.
S.H.E (Soul and Heath Education) is our Heath program that is geared towards healing the mind, body and soul of our ladies through health awareness. Participants will engage in our programs covering, exercise, nutrition, coming out to your health care provider, how to have fun and SAFE sex seminars, and more. U.C will also be putting together a “SHE GUIDE” that will include LGBT friendly doctors as well as those that come highly recommended by African American lesbians. Look for it in the near future.
This program was made for those who like to explore themselves artistically. This includes spoken word, poetry slams, plays and etc. We are always looking for talents to participate as well as volunteers to help.
Our 3 day lesbian retreat full of sisterhood, bonding and life changing events. This event will feature workshops, forums, film festivals, performances and is open to lesbians of color of all ages. We will encourage lesbians, bisexuals, and those that are questioning their sexual orientation to attend the Evolution Fest, to connect with other women that are just like them. Anyone interested in being on the strategic planning committee for this event is encouraged to apply for volunteering. All of people that are interested in performing, hosting workshops or other events please email contact@uzimacollective.org for more general information on how to do so. This event is scheduled to Fall 2011
- “Link up” Community Involvement Program
We are firm believers that in order to receive, you must be willing to give. We will be doing things like food drives, toys for tots, giving away school supplies and anything else that can better the general community that we live in. We invite anyone that would like to participate to “link up” with us…and lets change the world together!
- “Fusion Institute” Mentoring and Leadership Program
The idea of this program is to sculpt the next generation of African American Lesbians by making them into prominent business oriented individuals as well as leaders in today’s society. We have taken it upon ourselves to do this because we understand that the future of tomorrow start with the youth of today. Several ladies will be chosen each year to partake in the Fusion Institute. They will be given business management training, community program organizing, mentorship, as well as being allowed certain perks to our events for partaking in the program. This program is will in the making however we are taking applications for our Applicants and Mentors. There is a process for both group of ladies, please email us for those criteria qualifications.
Every year thousands of LGBT youth are put out on the streets, some of them will commit suicide while others will turn to sex and drugs as a outlet. The Uzima House of Hope will hopefully discourage those things by providing a safe and positive outlet to our LGBT youth. UHH is a fund that will be used to buy a home for these individuals. We will provide them with temporary housing while making sure they secure jobs, or some form of higher education while undergoing therapy and other programs. Each individual will be required to make a “goal assessment plan” and will have to follow this in order to successfully finish the program and receive the “GIFT”
